Find duplicate files

When to use it

The same folder arrived twice, through two channels, under different names.

Or a document was scanned twice, at two resolutions, and both files are there.

What this tool does

• Byte-for-byte identicals, by SHA-256 digest: certain, and instant. 142 megabytes of digests in 1.3 seconds.
• The same document under two files, recognised by content, and only proposed.
• The same scanned pages, brought together by an image digest used only as a pre-filter: the text decides.
• Series, which are not duplicates. Three payslips from three months look very much alike. Mistaking them for duplicates would delete two payslips out of three.

What it does not do: nothing is deleted. The tool does not copy certain duplicates into the sorted folder, and it records in the log what it did not copy.

What is read in the document

• The bytes of the file, for the exact digest, and the text of the document for resemblances.

No file is uploaded: the folder is read by your browser, in this tab, and the page is not allowed to open a connection to any other site.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tool delete duplicates?

No. It does not copy the ones it is sure about, and it says so. The original stays where it is.

Are two scans of the same page detected?

They are brought together and proposed. Measurement showed that an image digest does not separate two pages of text, however finely: the text decides, and you approve.
